Course Structure

• Risk assessment, hierarchy of control
• Slinging techniques and lifting gear selection, inspection & fault identification
• Crane types, load charts, weight calculations, centre of gravity
• Angle/reeve factors, 4 essential knots
• Signalling: hand, radio, whistle
• Practical: Plan, lift & relocate loads safely with a 25t slewing mobile crane (gear supplied)
• Preparation for work, pack up procedures

Dogging is the foundation for many advanced rigging roles, essential for anyone progressing in construction, crane operation, and heavy plant industries.

Who Can Enrol? Beginner to Advanced Candidates

Whether you’re a first-time learner or progressing towards higher risk work like rigger tickets and advanced rigging, this course suits:

• Beginners: No prior dogging/crane experience needed (must meet age and LLN prerequisites)
• Intermediate/Advanced: Practical skills and assessment tailored to your experience. Step towards rigger ticket and higher rigging qualification pathways.

Duration and Schedule

• 4 days (class size, competency & experience dependent).
• Maximum 8 participants per class.

Licencing Requirements in Tasmania

Prerequisites

• 18 years of age or older
• Language, literacy and numeracy skills required
• Valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) – create or find your USI
• Proof of identity and Tasmanian residential address (e.g. driver’s licence, utility bill, car registration)
• Completion of CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry required for construction work

Licence Cost

• Hobart: $1,250 per person (GST exempt)
• Launceston/Devonport: $1,400 per person (GST exempt)

Recognised Qualification & Licensing Pathways

Ticket Eligibility & Assessment

• Dogman Ticket: On successful completion, participants receive the national Statement of Attainment from RTO Talented Training (#45144), qualifying you for your Dogging Licence (DG).
• Advanced Pathways: This ticket is a required step towards enrolling for a rigger ticket or advanced rigging course.
• Assessment: Worksafe theory and practical assessment conducted on Day 4.

Location and Facilities

Delivery: Training available onsite or offsite, statewide across Tasmania
Supplied by HRWS:

• All training materials
• 25 tonne Slewing Mobile Crane (or similar) and all lifting gear

Facilities include tea, coffee, biscuits and access to local food outlets. Participants are welcome to bring lunch.

PPE required: Safety boots or enclosed shoes, long pants, and a hi‑vis short or long‑sleeve shirt.

Application

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely perform dogging work. Dogging consists of the application of slinging techniques to move a load, including the selection and inspection of lifting gear, and the directing of a plant operator in the movement of a load when the load is out of sight of the operator.

Dogging work is conducted in the construction industry and other industries where loads are lifted and moved using cranes or hoists.

Completion of the general construction induction training program, specified in the Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice: Construction Work, is required by anyone carrying out construction work. Achievement of CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.
